This Christmas was unusual for Dan and me; we normally spend time with both of our adult children as well as extended family living near Rochester, Michigan. But this Christmas Dan and I took the show on the road and traveled to Warm Beach Christian Camp and Conference Center just north of Seattle, where our daughter Jessica is in charge of the 850 volunteers who help staff the 20-day Lights of Christmas holiday production. This extravaganza features a gourmet dinner theatre, multiple drama and musical presentations, Bruce the Spruce the talking Christmas tree, a petting zoo, four restaurant venues, a train ride; live visits from Frosty the Snowman and Santa, and a display of more than 1.25 million lights. Dan and I enjoyed our roles as Mr. and Mrs. Claus one record-setting evening when more than 4,400 people visited the camp. But the highlight for us was hanging out with Jessica and simply basking in the sheer joy of her presence.
God surprised me with a number of new opportunities for 2010. Beginning in January, I will be a featured writer for Caring.com, the Internet’s largest provider of information for those caring for elderly parents. Caring.com is an affiliate of msn.com and receives more than 600,000 hits per month. As the writer addressing faith-based questions for Caring.com, I have been given a platform to speak to caregivers across the nation. I would greatly appreciate your prayer support as I begin this new endeavor.
Beginning the first of the year, you will also be able to see me featured as a regular guest speaker on Help for My Life (helpformylife.org), an Internet provider of faith-based information offered through RBC Ministries. My interview segments, conducted with counselor Tim Jackson, former pastor and RBC Ministries staff member Roy Clark, and New York Times best-selling co-author of 90 Minutes in Heaven Cec Murphey, focus on encouragement and practical help for caregivers and their loved ones. Help for My Life provides a wide array of round table discussions and print and video resources on topics ranging from faith in crisis to abuse, addictions, mental health, marriage and family, relationships, and sexuality. RBC Ministries is the parent company of Discovery House Publishers, publishers of my caregiving books Precious Lord Take My Hand: Meditations for Caregivers (in its 7th printing) and Ambushed by Grace: Help and Hope on the Caregiving Journey (now in its 3rd printing).
Daughters of Destiny
I’m also happy to announce that I’ve been invited to join the national speakers’ bureau for Daughters of Destiny, the nation’s fastest growing women’s prison ministry. As God provides the opportunity, I will be traveling to prisons around the nation and presenting seminars on my book The Silent Seduction of Self-Talk: Conforming Deadly Thought Patterns to the Word of God. As part of this effort, I am praying for partners who can help me provide complimentary copies of Silent Seduction to women behind bars. If you would like to make a contribution to this effort, please contact me by email at email@example.com.
Music for the Soul
God has also blessed me with the amazing opportunity to serve as an advisory board member for Music for the Soul (musicforthesoul.org) with gifted songwriter and producer Steve Siler. Steve has written music that has been performed by Stevie Wonder, Patti LaBelle, Avalon, Point of Grace, and many more well-known contemporary artists. Steve also wrote the song that opens the Special Olympics and is the creator and producer of Somebody’s Daughter, a powerful anti-pornography DVD that has won twenty-eight film awards. Steve’s projects include More Beautiful, a CD and DVD for those fighting breast cancer; Whole in the Sight of God, a CD for parents of special needs children; Tell Me What You See, a CD for those struggling with anorexia and bulimia; Chaos of the Heart, a CD for those touched by suicide, as well as numerous additional projects.
Steve has asked that I record selections from my caregiving book Precious Lord, Take My Hand: Meditations for Caregivers on his upcoming Dignity project for caregivers. I am humbled and touched by this unique opportunity to expand the ministry of Precious Lord, as well as to extend the legacy of my mother and father-in-law that are recorded in the pages of this book of meditations. Should you desire to donate to the Dignity project in memory of a loved one or as a partner in this life-changing ministry to caregivers, contact Music for the Soul at musicforthesoul.org.
Look for my newest release coming out in 2011: A Visual History of the King James Version (Baker Books). Yes, you heard it right. The year 2011 commemorates the 400th birthday of the King James Version of the Bible, and it was my pleasure these past months to co-write with Dr. Donald Brake, one of the world’s foremost authorities on the King James Bible. A Visual History of the King James Bible reveals the inside secrets of the story of the KJV in a beautiful pictorial format. It’s a book I’m quite proud of.
I’m also proud to be one of three women who constituted the writing team for The NIV Stewardship Study Bible (Zondervan 2009). I contributed the introductions for all the books of the Bible, as well as the 99 Profile biography selections.
I’m currently at work on a new Bible, a new novel, a new caregiving book, and a new co-write, so life is exciting at the Beach house, if you can use the word exciting to describe a middle-aged woman sitting at her computer typing all day. Feel free to give me a call, and offer to take me to lunch.
If you’re a caregiver and you’re on Facebook, be sure to check out Caregiving Journey, a new source of caregiving encouragement and information. And be sure to stop by Caring.com to check out my column.
I hope to see you in the months ahead in my travels across the nation and into Canada. Be sure to look me up on Facebook if you haven’t already. And rumors are circulating that I’ll soon be Twittering! I can hardly keep up with myself!
